Getting your team down the field

As a business leader, I want to help my team to win.  We all do.  But I have a problem.  Maybe I should just admit it to you.  I’ll go first.

Hi.  My name is Nate and I have a problem.  I am a junkie.  It’s true.  A die-hard, can’t get enough of it, football junkie!

As I write this post, the upcoming football season is just under a month away.  I am giddy!  I can hardly stand it.  I can almost smell the tailgating and feel the winds of change coming. Football is here and life is good!

I was flipping through the channels the other day and came across the B1G media days.  The media days are a few days of coaches from the conference coming together to talk about the upcoming season.  In one of the sessions, a reporter was asking a head coach about how he evaluates his quarterbacks.  “What are the thing you are looking for when you’re trying to determine which quarterback to use or when you’re trying to determine who is a good fit for your program?”

I was interested in what he would say.  In fact, I think that you may be, too.  His answer holds a few key thoughts for you and your ability to lead in your business as well.

Moving the Ball Down the Field

There is a lot that goes into being a quarterback and opinions vary as to what is most important.  However, this coach identified something that made a lot of sense to me.  His answer was this:

“Can the quarterback move the ball and the team down the field.  That’s all that matters.”

The coach went on to say that certain characteristics were important.  Things like arm strength, avoiding the rush, good feet, etc.  But in the end, nothing matters more than the quarterback’s ability to move the ball and the team down the field to score points.

It made so much sense and made me think of how similar this is in business as well.

There are a lot of important things to be good at:

  • communicating
  • selling
  • organization
  • work ethic
  • sacrifice
  • commitment

But if you had to boil it all down to what was most important, I think the answer would be the same. How well are you able to move your team down the field?

That’s it in a nutshell.

The Only Thing That Matters

One of the reasons this is so important to you and I is that we often get stuck in the comparison trap. We’re constantly comparing our quarterbacking skills (or team building/leading skills/communicating skills) to other leaders in our industry or team.  We watch how they move and manage their teams and often try to be just like them. This can be a good thing and a bad thing at the same time.

You should absolutely be following someone who is winning and try to put into practice what they’re doing. But don’t compare yourself and your skills to them or any others.  Don’t beat yourself up if you’re skill set is different from theirs.  Put your spin on things and make it your own.  In the end, the only thing that will matter is still the same:

Did you get your team in down the field and in position to win?

If so, you’ve done your job!  You’ll win the game.
