The best leadership question ever!

The topic of leadership is not a new one.  Countless articles, blogs, and books have been written on the subject.  Why?  Because, I would argue, it is the MOST important issue that confronts home based business owners and entrepreneurs today.

When it comes to discussing leadership principles, the questions abound:

  • What does it take to be a great leader?
  • How do I become a better leader?
  • What can I do to get my team to follow me?
  • What do I do if I don’t feel like a leader?
  • I work for myself, why is leadership important to me?

Chances are, you’ve probably asked these questions or ones similar to it.

But here’s another question for you to consider:

Have you asked the best leadership question ever?

Lets see if you have!

Best Leader Ever

Before we get to the question, pretend that you are starting your business over from the beginning.

If you had the chance to hand pick the absolute best leader in your company or industry to lead you, who would you pick? This is a good question to start with.  Let’s follow it up with the logical next question: Why would you pick them, exactly?

Spend some time with this before you move forward.  After all, what good is knowing something without putting it into practice, right?

Write down who you would pick as your ideal mentor/leader and then list some reasons why you would follow them?

What did you come up with?

  •  This leader does what they say they will do
  • This leader is passionate and has a deep belief in what they do and how their products can help
  • This leader loves people well
  • This leader can influence people and make them want to change and grow
  • This leader inspires people
  • This leader is confident
  • This leader makes me believe I can be more and have more

The Best Leadership Question Ever

Now for the good part.

Once you’ve got a clear picture of the kind of leader that you would choose to follow if you could, it is time for you to ask yourself the best leadership question ever.

Here it is:

Based on what you would like to see in your ideal leader and the on the way that you lead others today, would you follow you?

I have to be honest.  I’m not sure I would always choose me.  How about you?  Would you follow you?

Here’s the good news:  you can change.  You can become the leader that deserves to be followed.  You can become a better leader than you are today.  The only thing that stands in your way?  You.  The only thing in my way?  Me.

That’s it.

People are looking up to you whether you feel like a leader or not.  They want you to lead.  They need you to lead.  So lead.  Become someone that YOU would choose to follow.

This certainly is the place to start, as the greatest leader of all time said for us to examine ourselves. And often times we find ourselves lacking. That is where another principle comes in of one man teaching another who will be able to teach others also.
So then we find that there is wisdom to be found in the counsel of others.
    Thanks for being that counsel!
